CentOS Dojo Barcelona, Spain, Wednesday 29th October 2014

A one day sysadmin centric learning and sharing experience

The CentOS Dojo's are a one day event, organised around the world, that bring together people from the CentOS Communities to talk about systems administration, best practises in linux centric activities and emerging technologies of note. The emphasis is to find local speakers and tutors to come together and talk about things that they care about most, and to share stories from their experiences working with CentOS in various scenarios.

Registration

In order to keep the sessions productive, the number of seats available are limited. We encourage everyone to register as early as possible.

Registrations close on the 26th Oct 2014 and everyone registering gets an exclusive CentOS Dojo T-shirt.

The CentOS Dojo is colocated with the OpenNebula TechDay that runs on the 28th October from 15:00 to 19:00 in the same venue. The tutorial is aimed at people looking to get started with Cloud on private and public infrastructure. Please remember to let us know in the registration if you are going to be attending the Tutorial as well as the Dojo.

The event will start at 09.30 and will end at 17.30. We will break for a coffee rest at 11:00am and then for Lunch at 13:30hrs. Coffee and Lunch will be provided to everyone attending the Dojo.

MariaDB (MySQL++) for CentOS admins and developers; CentOS 7 comes with MariaDB 5.5 as the default MySQL database. Learn what else you get over regular MySQL. Both developers and sysadmins will benefit from this deep dive session. We will do into detailed differences between MySQL and MariaDB and include example code, tips and tricks for performance tuning and deployment strategies.

How to tune your Xen deployment for performance: Xen has several options and different kinds of guests, knowing when to use each kind of guest, and how to tune it's parameters for optimal performance can make a big difference. This talk will cover the types of guests that can be deployed on Xen, and the different options you can use to obtain the best performance. The Xen hyper-visor powers some of the largest, most popular, most available public clouds these days, the tips and tricks from this session will be useful for people optimising and tuning their cloud instances in these public clouds. While Roger is doing his session in english, he welcomes interaction in either spanish or english.

Introducing CentOS Docker Host: A quick guide to what docker is, why its getting so much attention and how people can use it. From their laptops to the cloud. The first half of this talk will be an introduction, and the second half will be a demo, tutorial format that people can also run on their laptops. Instructions on howto prep your laptop for this session will be emailed ahead of time to all confirmed attendees.

Running CentOS in the cloud : Getting started with CentOS Linux 7 on Amazon Web Services, Google Compute Platform and HPCloud. This will be an interactive follow-allong hack session where the audience is welcomed to setup complimentary accounts on these services, and trial the CentOS Linux images available. Details on how people need to setup their laptops will be emailed ahead of time, and we will provide help on the day.

From Private Cloud to IaaS Public services for Catalan R&E community :: Nowadays, Catalan Academic and research institutions can enjoy self-service cloud infrastructure in order to meet their application needs in a flexible pay per use mode. An self-service platform is available for managing servers, networks and assigned storage from the Universities Consortium data centers, allowing users access to a customizable infrastructure with an orientation towards the so-call virtual datacenter. This technical talk will cover the different steps that we've done to offer IaaS public services (Opennebula powered) for R&E community with ICT infrastructure efficient usage, ecosystem special requirements, advanced networking capabilities,... in mind.

Local Hotels

For accommodation, there is a very convenient university residence very close to CSUC facilities: http://www.resa.es/eng/Residences/Torre-Girona

There are also many hotels at walking distance (20') and well connected by tram (goes through Diagonal Avenue), metro and bus:

If you prefer a hotel located in the city center, CSUC has an agreement with H10 Universitat Hotel. To benefit from this agreement, please contact Clara Camí and don't forget to include the code "CSUC" when you ask for a reservation. Conditions are as follows: Doble room for an individual use, Breakfast included, Free WiFi, 120 € (VAT included, Tourist Tax not included: this tax will range from 0.50 euros to 2.50 euros per person, per night depending on the category of accommodation you’re staying in). From H10 Universitat hotel, you might need 35 minutes to reach CSUC (door to door).

Please, as a general recommendation, I would suggest you to be careful about hotels located in Raval and Barri Gòtic districts, because these places have the taste and beauty for a walk during the day time, but might turn into an inconvenient place for tourists at night.
